Abstract:

FPGA Based implementation of a single-input single-output (SISO) DC Biased Optical Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing (DCO-OFDM) Transceiver for Visible Light Communication (VLC) System is explained in this thesis. Different sections of this thesis will focus on different parts of the OFDM algorithm.

VLC is a type of data communication that employs visible light from a light emitting diode (LED) as a short-range transmission technique. Communication occurs by modulating the optical signal. There are many different modulation techniques, some of which are multi-carrier modulation.

OFDM is a multi-carrier modulation technique used in broadband wired and wireless communication systems. Many versions of OFDM are used in specific areas, and one version called Direct Current Biased Optical Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing (DCO-OFDM) is used in VLC Systems. In other versions, the output of OFDM is generally complex and bipolar; however, in VLC Systems, optical signals are real and positive. In DCO-OFDM, the technique is different so that the output is real and positive, enabling the use of VLC Systems. In such VLC systems, multiple LEDs and Photodetectors (PD) can be employed for faster communication; this technique is called multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO). Different approaches include single-input multiple-output (SIMO), MISO, and SISO. This thesis will explain the details of SISO DCO-OFDM and hardware implementation of said SISO DCO-OFDM on a Field Programmable Gate Array (FPGA).
